UNIABUJA ‘Sacks Two Professors’ for Demanding Sex for Marks

University of Abuja has dismissed two professors over alleged sexual harassment of students.
On Monday, Prof. AbdulRasheed NaAllah, the vice chancellor of the institution, said the university introduced laws on sex abuse after the two lecturers were dismissed, stressing that he was committed to staying tough on exploitative lecturer according daily trust
“I have dismissed two professors guilty of sexual harassment offence. They are professors, so it says a lot about our commitment to protecting girls,” the vice chancellor said.
The rising cases of sexual harrasment within the education sector has forced many institutions to increase its toughness on offending persons.
Commenting on sexual harassment of students, Prof. Joseph Olagunju of Lagos State University, said that it has debilitating impacts on the society.
“Of course, this has a very negative impact on the academia. It impacts negatively on the institution. It should not be allowed to fester in any way because it damages the image of the institution,” he said.
In 2019, after a BBC documentary on sexual exploitation of students in Nigerian schools, University of Lagos sacked Dr. Boniface Ighenegbu and Dr. Samuel Oladipo, two lecturers, after finding them guilty.
Months before the two UNILAG lecturers were dismissed, Prof. Richard Akindele, a lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University, was also dismissed over a case of sexual harassment.
University of Abuja says it is working with NGOs to curb sexual harassment within the institution.
“We cannot allow the lives of our students to be destroyed because most of the abuses destroy the lives of their victims,” Prof. NaAllah said
