A fire outbreak on Saturday in Ilorin, Kwara State, was reportedly triggered by a pressing iron left unattended in a laundry shop. The incident occurred around 1:50 pm at No. 4, opposite Layo Hotel, Coca-Cola Road, in a building containing four-bedroom flats.

Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, explained that the plugged-in iron overheated, igniting nearby combustible materials and causing the fire.

“The blaze affected one of the flats in the building, but firefighters arrived promptly and contained it, preventing the fire from spreading to the other units,” he said.

Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, Director of the State Fire Service, cautioned residents and business operators to always unplug electrical appliances when not in use, particularly heat-generating devices like pressing irons.

He stressed that negligence with electrical equipment is a leading cause of preventable fires and urged the public to practice safety measures at all times.
