Abuja, Nigeria — The United Nations has issued a dire warning, stating that an estimated 31 million people in Nigeria are currently facing severe food insecurity, with millions more across West and Central Africa at similar risk. The situation is being worsened by conflict, inflation, and climate-related disruptions.

According to the World Food Programme (WFP) and other UN agencies, humanitarian partners are struggling to respond due to funding shortfalls. Only 21% of the $130 million needed for Nigeria’s food security interventions this year has been raised.

“The situation is rapidly deteriorating. Without urgent funding, 1.3 million Nigerians will be cut off from food aid, and over 300,000 children could suffer from severe acute malnutrition,” said a WFP official.

Nigerian authorities are urging development partners and donor agencies to increase their support, while calling on citizens to assist in community-level relief efforts.
