A cargo ship navigating the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unidentified projectile on Wednesday morning, resulting in a fire onboard, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The UKMTO confirmed that the crew evacuated the vessel safely and urged all ships in the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity while investigations continue.

The incident occurred 11 nautical miles north of Oman. Officials noted that no environmental damage has been reported.

The attack comes shortly after Donald Trump warned that any mines placed in the strait must be removed immediately. U.S. forces also sank several Iranian vessels, including 16 minelayers, near the waterway on Tuesday, U.S. Central Command confirmed.

Shipping through the strategically critical strait, which links the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and handles roughly 20% of global oil and gas traffic, has slowed dramatically since U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran on February 28. Recent days have seen several retaliatory attacks on vessels attempting to transit the corridor.
