UK Grants 99% Duty-Free Access to Nigerian Exports Under New Trade Scheme to Boost Bilateral Growth

In a renewed effort to strengthen economic ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, the UK government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that 99% of Nigerian exports continue to enjoy duty-free access under the Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS).
This development was disclosed on Thursday, June 19, 2025, by the British High Commission in Nigeria via an official post on its verified X (formerly Twitter) handle.
“Our commitment to UK-Nigeria economic growth remains strong.
Nigerian exporters can continue to benefit from the UK’s Developing Countries Trading Scheme, which offers 99% duty-free access on goods,” the statement read.
The DCTS, launched in 2023, replaced the UK’s former Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP). It was introduced as a more generous and streamlined trade initiative designed to promote sustainable development and economic growth across 65 developing countries, including Nigeria.
Under the DCTS, Nigerian exporters gain simplified trading rules, reduced tariffs, and easier market access to the UK. This move aims to enhance Nigeria’s non-oil exports, create jobs, and improve the country’s foreign exchange earnings.
According to trade experts, this duty-free opportunity is expected to encourage diversification of Nigeria’s economy, especially in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, textiles, and processed foods.
The UK government said it remains committed to supporting developing economies through inclusive trade policies that foster mutual economic benefits and long-term partnerships.
This announcement comes at a time when both nations are exploring more bilateral trade agreements to strengthen economic diplomacy and boost post-Brexit trade engagements with African countries.
