A Nigerian man, Lucius Njoku, has been handed a suspended jail sentence in the United Kingdom for impersonating a female nurse and working illegally at an NHS hospital.
The 33-year-old reportedly assumed the identity of Joyce George, a female agency nurse, to secure shifts as a healthcare assistant at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Cheshire.
Njoku, who wore George’s NHS name badge—complete with her photo—managed to work undetected for several weeks until a patient raised suspicions about his identity.
Following the incident, hospital officials reviewed CCTV footage, confirming that Njoku had carried out multiple shifts under the false name.
Investigations revealed that George, also a Nigerian national, had initially obtained her job legitimately through an agency but later allowed Njoku to take her place during her scheduled shifts between February and April 2024.
Authorities later found Njoku at George’s home, where seized phones revealed exchanges between them discussing work schedules.
At Chester Magistrates’ Court, Njoku pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation.
He was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, ordered to perform 80 hours of community service, and pay £239 in court costs and surcharges.
Meanwhile, the court noted that George’s role in enabling the impersonation is still under investigation.
