Former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou has explained why Nigerian attacker Ademola Lookman failed to find the back of the net in Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 victory over FC Barcelona in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

Kalou suggested that Lookman was deployed in a more defensive role during the match, limiting his usual attacking influence and reducing his chances to score.

The game, played on Wednesday at Camp Nou, saw Atletico Madrid secure a solid advantage, with goals from Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth sealing the win. Lookman, who joined Atletico from Atalanta during the winter transfer window, was substituted in the second half as the team pushed to maintain control.

Despite the quiet outing, Kalou expressed strong confidence in Lookman’s abilities, describing him as an outstanding player with the support of fans across Africa as he continues his Champions League campaign.

Speaking in an interview with SuperSport, Kalou noted that tactical decisions often require players to adapt, even if it means stepping away from their natural attacking roles.

Lookman has enjoyed an impressive European season so far, contributing goals and assists as he continues to make his mark in one of football’s biggest competitions.
