U.S. Navy Sinks 16 Iranian Minelayers Amid Reports of Hormuz Strait Mining

American military forces on Tuesday destroyed multiple Iranian vessels, including 16 minelayers, near the Strait of Hormuz, following intelligence that Tehran may have been attempting to lay mines in the strategic waterway vital to global oil transport.

The U.S. Central Command confirmed the strikes, which come after President Donald Trump warned that any mines deployed in the Strait must be removed immediately, threatening unprecedented military consequences if ignored.

Trump stated in a social media post that 10 inactive minelaying ships had already been sunk, with further actions planned if necessary. He added that removal of any deployed mines would represent a positive step.

Reports indicate that Iran has laid only a limited number of mines in recent days, with sources suggesting a few dozen in total. However, Tehran still retains over 80% of its small boats and minelayers, giving it the capacity to deploy hundreds of additional mines if desired.

The Strait of Hormuz, situated between Oman and Iran, remains a critical artery for global energy, with roughly 13 million barrels of crude oil passing through daily in 2025—accounting for about 31% of seaborne oil shipments worldwide, according to Kpler.
