U.S. Lawmakers Divided as Democrats Condemn Trump’s Iran Threats, Republicans Rally Support

Sharp divisions have emerged in Washington after U.S. President Donald Trump issued renewed threats against Iran, with Democrats strongly criticising his remarks while many Republicans voiced support.
Several Democratic lawmakers condemned the president’s statements, which included threats to target Iran’s civilian infrastructure such as power plants and bridges. Critics argue that such actions could violate international law and potentially amount to war crimes.
Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari, who has Iranian roots, went as far as calling for the invocation of the 25th Amendment, suggesting the president is unfit to lead. She described his comments as dangerous to both national and global security.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries also criticised the remarks, describing them as disturbing and inappropriate, while raising concerns about the tone and implications of the president’s message.
The backlash followed a controversial social media post by Trump during the Easter period, in which he warned Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face severe military action. The language and timing of the message drew widespread criticism both domestically and internationally.
Senator Elissa Slotkin warned that deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure would breach the Geneva Conventions and contradict established military laws of engagement. Similarly, Senator Bernie Sanders called for an immediate end to the conflict, urging Congress to intervene.
Adding to the criticism, Senator Jeff Merkley emphasized that U.S. military personnel are legally bound to reject unlawful orders, including any directive that could constitute war crimes.
Despite the backlash, many Republican figures have defended Trump’s stance, arguing that strong measures are necessary to counter Iran’s actions in the region.
Meanwhile, Iran has maintained a defiant position, refusing to yield to pressure. Tehran has continued efforts to disrupt global oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz while launching missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and other regional interests.
The escalating rhetoric and military actions have heightened fears of a broader conflict, with global leaders closely monitoring the situation due to its potential impact on international security and energy markets.
