The Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced two individuals, Babatunde Olaitan (popularly known as TDollar) and Tobilola Olamide (also known as TobiNation), to six months imprisonment each for abusing the Nigerian currency by spraying naira notes at a social event.
Presiding over the case, Justice Alexander Owoeye convicted the duo after they pleaded guilty to one-count charges filed separately by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges were brought under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, which criminalizes the spraying, mutilation, or any form of abuse of the naira.
According to the EFCC, the incident occurred on April 8, 2025, at a party held at 23 Macdonald Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, where both convicts were caught on video spraying N200 notes. The video, which later went viral on TikTok, prompted an investigation by the commission.
EFCC operative Ibrahim Bukar testified in court that Olaitan admitted to receiving a bundle of N200 notes from a fan at a nightclub, which he then sprayed at the event. Both Olaitan and Olamide were shown the footage during interrogation and voluntarily made statements that were submitted as evidence.
Following the presentation of facts by EFCC prosecutors C.C. Okezie and H.U. KofarNaisa, the court sentenced each convict to six months imprisonment, with an option of a N200,000 fine.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to enforcing the CBN Act and curbing all forms of naira abuse, especially during social gatherings and on social media platforms.
