Two people lost their lives, and several others were injured in separate road crashes across Lagos State on January 1, 2026.
One of the deadly collisions occurred at Iyana Itire, inbound Oshodi, where a Volkswagen commercial bus (SMK 850 HK) collided with a Toyota Sienna (KSF 329 XL), killing two occupants instantly.
In another incident along Ibeju Bridge on the inward Eleko stretch of the Lekki-Ajah Expressway, a DAF tanker slammed into an Opel Zafira (EPE 537 GZ), leaving two people critically injured.
A third crash was reported at Owode Elede, inbound Owode Onirin along Ikorodu Road, involving a Volkswagen commercial bus (AGL 713 XP) and a Toyota Corolla (AGL 607 JF), resulting in injuries to four occupants.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the accidents. Its General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said personnel immediately alerted the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) to evacuate the deceased, while the injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Traffic was restored after the incidents.
Bakare-Oki described the accidents as preventable, blaming reckless driving and speeding, and urged motorists to follow traffic rules and drive cautiously, especially during festive periods.
