At least two people have lost their lives and seven others sustained injuries following a violent clash between farmers and herders in Dagaceri, Birniwa Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The midnight confrontation, which occurred on Wednesday, reportedly stemmed from a prolonged dispute over farmland and grazing routes that has long plagued the area.

According to eyewitness accounts, the chaos forced several residents to flee for safety as homes were set ablaze and properties destroyed.

Confirming the incident on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Jigawa State, SP Shi’isu Adam, said that seven suspects have been apprehended in connection with the attack.

He stated, “Our officers recovered bows and arrows, cutlasses, mobile phones, and local charms at the scene. We have launched Operation Salama to restore peace and order in the community.”

Residents described the night as one of terror and confusion.
An eyewitness, Hassan Abdullahi, said, “People ran in every direction as attackers torched houses. It was a night filled with fear and chaos.”

Another local, Izaddeen Usman, recounted, “I hid in the bushes with my children. The screams from the distance made it clear that many were in danger.”

Community elders and leaders have since called for calm and dialogue. Malam Garba, one of the elders, urged both sides to embrace peace: “We cannot afford more bloodshed. Dialogue is the only path forward.”

Similarly, Usman Tela, a local leader, expressed hope that stability would soon return so residents could resume their normal lives without fear. Security personnel have intensified patrols across the area to prevent further violence as displaced families begin to rebuild.

Human rights activist, Bala Nura, condemned the attack and urged both the government and security agencies to act swiftly to protect vulnerable villagers. “The government must ensure justice for victims and take decisive steps against those behind these repeated clashes,” he said.

Efforts to reach the leadership of the herders’ association, Kautal Houre, for comments were unsuccessful as calls to the state chairman went unanswered.

Meanwhile, sources revealed that state authorities are planning a peace dialogue and exploring the creation of grazing reserves to curb future conflicts between farmers and herders in the region.
