Trump’s Tariffs Hit Africa: Full List of Affected Countries

BY, SPRINGNEWSNG MEDIA LIMITED APRIL 3,2025

U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled his highly anticipated tariffs on global trading partners, announced on what he referred to as “Liberation Day.” The move, which aims to boost U.S. manufacturing and punish nations accused of unfair trade practices, includes a 10 percent baseline tariff on all imports into the U.S. from all countries, with higher rates imposed on countries with trade surpluses with the U.S.

For the first time, African nations have been directly targeted by these tariffs. Among the most affected is the southern African nation of Lesotho, where goods will face a 50 percent tariff.

In his speech, Trump said, “Our country has been looted, pillaged, raped, plundered by other nations…Taxpayers have been ripped off for more than 50 years, but it is not going to happen anymore.”

In addition to countries like China, Vietnam, and the European Union, the following African nations have been named in Trump’s tariffs:

  • Botswana – 37 percent
  • South Africa – 30 percent
  • Tunisia – 28 percent
  • Côte d’Ivoire – 21 percent
  • Egypt – 10 percent
  • Morocco – 10 percent

Although Nigeria and other African nations exporting to the U.S. were not included in Trump’s supplementary list, the 10 percent baseline tariff will still impact their exports.

In 2023, Nigeria was the second-largest U.S. export destination in Sub-Saharan Africa, with exports worth $6.29 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of $3.29 billion for the U.S.

The tariffs are set to go into effect on April 5, with the higher duties to begin on April 9. The move is expected to generate hundreds of billions in annual revenue, funding various key U.S. projects.
