Trump Orders Nuclear Submarine Deployment After Verbal Clash With Russia’s Medvedev

Washington, August 2, 2025U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines following a heated exchange with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, signaling a sharp escalation in U.S.-Russia tensions.

Trump announced the move on social media, describing Medvedev’s recent remarks as “foolish and inflammatory” and warning that reckless words can trigger serious consequences.

“Words are very important and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances,” Trump wrote.

Speaking to reporters later, the U.S. president said the submarine repositioning was a precautionary step.

“We had to do that. A threat was made, and we didn’t think it was appropriate to ignore,” Trump said. “When you talk about nuclear, we have to be prepared — and we’re totally prepared.”

The White House has not clarified whether the submarines are nuclear-armed or nuclear-powered, and the Pentagon referred inquiries to the National Security Council. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth amplified Trump’s post but provided no additional details.

The confrontation stems from a July 28 social media post by Medvedev, now Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, warning that each U.S. ultimatum is “a step toward war… not with Ukraine, but with [Trump’s] own country.” Trump fired back on Thursday, calling Medvedev a “failed leader” who is “entering very dangerous territory.”

This latest geopolitical standoff comes as the Trump administration considers new sanctions on Russia, potentially effective August 8, if Moscow does not cease its war in Ukraine. Trump also used the same post to criticize India, a major importer of Russian crude oil.

Global markets reacted to the rising tension, with West Texas Intermediate crude briefly falling 3.2% on weak U.S. economic data before recovering slightly after Trump’s comments.

The move underscores a hardening of U.S. policy toward Moscow and raises concerns about nuclear posturing amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
