Former President Donald Trump has blamed the “radical left” for the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, even though authorities have not identified a suspect or motive in the Utah shooting.
Kirk, 31, co-founder of Turning Point USA and a leading figure in Trump’s MAGA movement, was fatally shot Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University. While political leaders across party lines mourned his death and condemned political violence, Trump issued a video statement directly blaming the left.
“For years, those on the radical left have compared wonderful Americans like Charlie to Nazis and the world’s worst mass murderers,” Trump said. “This kind of rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism we’re seeing in our country today, and it must stop.”
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox called the killing a “political assassination,” but federal and state investigators have not released any findings on the attacker’s identity or political affiliations.
Political violence has escalated in recent years across party lines. Trump himself survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania last year, while Democrats such as Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman have also faced deadly attacks.
Trump’s pointed remarks stood in contrast to bipartisan tributes. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, often one of Trump’s fiercest critics, condemned the shooting as “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible,” insisting that the U.S. must “reject political violence in EVERY form.”
Flags were lowered to half-staff at the White House and across Trump properties. Trump’s sons, Eric and Donald Jr., both shared emotional tributes, with Don Jr. calling Kirk “like a little brother” and vowing to carry his legacy forward.
