Chelsea have reportedly entered the race to sign Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz, with Manchester City also expressing interest in the Brazilian playmaker’s availability.

City’s challenging season hit another low on Wednesday night when they suffered a 4-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. The loss leaves Pep Guardiola’s men on the brink of European elimination. Domestically, the Premier League champions are struggling as well, currently sitting fifth, a staggering 12 points behind league leaders Liverpool, who still have a game in hand.

Guardiola is expected to act decisively in the transfer market this window to salvage his side’s season. Forward Omar Marmoush is reportedly close to joining the Citizens, following the recent signing of defender Abdukodir Khusanov. However, their plans to strengthen the midfield could face a significant obstacle.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have emerged as contenders to sign Douglas Luiz, potentially jeopardizing City’s pursuit of the Juventus midfielder. While Juventus are reluctant to approve a loan deal, both Premier League clubs seem determined to push for Luiz’s signature.

City’s dramatic collapse against PSG—where they surrendered a 2-0 lead to concede four second-half goals—highlighted their vulnerabilities. The absence of Rodri at the base of midfield has left Guardiola’s side unable to dominate games as they typically do. While Rodri’s injury is a key factor, it is surprising to see City struggling to this extent.

Douglas Luiz, known for his exceptional passing and composure under pressure, showcased his abilities during his spell with Aston Villa in the Premier League. Although he is not a natural defensive midfielder, Luiz has experience playing in deeper roles and could fit seamlessly into City’s midfield.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are also battling inconsistency. Their recent 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers was their first in six league games, a run that included three draws and two losses. Despite Moisés Caicedo’s standout performances, the Blues have lacked stability in midfield due to frequent changes in personnel.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca could benefit from utilizing Luiz in a box-to-box role. Positioned ahead of Caicedo, Luiz could contribute to unlocking stubborn defences, helping the Blues in the attacking third. While Luiz may not solve Chelsea’s defensive frailties, his ability to retain possession and limit turnovers could reduce their vulnerability to counterattacks.

As the transfer window progresses, the battle for Douglas Luiz could intensify. For City, securing the Brazilian could help revive their faltering campaign, while for Chelsea, his arrival might provide the spark needed to reignite their title ambitions.
