Tragedy struck in the Oshodi area of Lagos on Saturday when a 50-year-old man, identified simply as Emmanuel, was fatally crushed by a train near Arena Shopping Mall.

According to reports from PUNCH Online, the victim’s sister received a phone call around 9 a.m., informing her that her older brother had been killed by the moving train.

Confirming the incident, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Command, said that the Mosafejo Division was alerted to the tragic event around 1:33 p.m. and immediately dispatched a team of detectives to the scene.

“The scene was visited and photographed by a team of detectives,” Hundeyin said in a statement. He also confirmed that Emmanuel’s body had been taken to a public morgue for autopsy. The case has now been transferred to the Railway Police Command in Ebute Metta for further investigation.

While the details surrounding the accident remain unclear, this tragedy echoes a similar incident in August when another man was crushed to death by a moving train in the Mushin area of Lagos. That accident occurred around 6 p.m. near the Cappa railway tracks.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, through its spokesman Nosa Okunbor, confirmed that the victim in the Mushin incident had died instantly from the severe injuries sustained in the crash.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading to the latest fatal train accident.
