Tragedy strikes detention center in Mexico with 39 immigrants dead
Terrible news has emerged from Mexico where a fire at an immigration detention center saw 39 people lose their lives.
The event took place in Northern Mexico at Ciudad Juarez and it cannot yet be confirmed whether more than 39 people have passed away
The news was confirmed thanks to a statement from the National Migration Institute (INM) quoted by the AFP agency. It is reported that the fire started when some people were burning mattresses and the fire then spread out of control.
The fire broke out before midnight, but the firefighters could not do more to save all the victims, as the fire spread at a barbaric speed.
There were also dozens of ambulances to transfer the injured to the various hospitals, while the military and the national guard helped in the extinguishing work and in trying to rescue the victims of this tragedy.
Victims thought to be mainly Venezuelans
The incident occurred after a large group of immigrants, around 70, were taken to the center and detained
According to various sources, most of these people were of Venezuelan nationality, although it is still too early to know the identity of the victims. There has been serious political unrest in Venezuela as well as a decreasing standard of living, leading many citizens to head north in search of a better life
With Mexico being located beneath the United States of America, it is a common transit route for those further south who want to make it to the USA
