Kano, Nigeria – A tragic incident occurred in Bazabe Quarters, Albasu Local Government Area of Kano State, where two men lost their lives after falling into a pit toilet while attempting to recover a mobile phone.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the unfortunate event took place on Saturday morning. The Fire Service received an emergency call at about 11:16 a.m. from Inspector Auwalu, reporting that two individuals had fallen into a pit latrine.
A rescue team was immediately dispatched from Takai Local Government Area to the scene.
The first victim, 40-year-old Usman Muhd, reportedly dropped his phone—popularly known locally as Indon Kauye—into the toilet and entered the pit in an attempt to retrieve it. Sadly, he became trapped inside.
In a bid to save him, another man, identified as 40-year-old Ibrahim Inuwa, entered the pit and tied a rope around Usman in an attempt to pull him out. However, Ibrahim also lost consciousness while inside the pit.
“Both men were eventually pulled out by our rescue team but were found unconscious and were later confirmed dead,” the statement read.
Their bodies were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of Albasu LGA, SP Kabiru Magawata, for necessary procedures.
The Kano State Fire Service has urged the public to avoid entering hazardous areas such as pit toilets and to always call emergency responders in similar situations
