A young woman from Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State has reportedly died by suicide after being compelled by her father to marry one of his friends against her will.
The heartbreaking incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. on Sunday, according to local sources who said the victim had been struggling with emotional trauma following repeated pressure from her family to accept the arranged marriage.
A child protection advocate, Bukar Fantami Gubio, confirmed the development, describing it as a deeply distressing and avoidable tragedy.
He explained that the young woman had repeatedly voiced her refusal to marry the man selected by her father, insisting she loved someone else. “The mental anguish and pressure she faced due to the forced marriage ultimately drove her to take her own life. This is a tragedy that should never have happened,” Gubio said.
He called on human rights groups, security agencies, and relevant authorities to launch a thorough investigation and ensure justice is served. He also urged stronger enforcement of laws protecting women’s rights and freedom of choice in marriage.
Gubio appealed to parents and traditional leaders to respect the autonomy and consent of young women, warning that forced marriages remain a grave violation of human rights.
“This painful incident reminds us of the urgent need to protect young women from all forms of coercion, abuse, and emotional neglect,” he added.
As of press time, neither the police nor the Borno State government had released an official statement regarding the incident.
