Benin City, Edo State — A devastating fire outbreak on Sunday night claimed the life of a 60-year-old man, Etebet Oyemara, in Benin City. The incident occurred at No. 14 Benson Street, off Okhoro Road, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
Oyemara, who served as an usher and head of the electrical unit at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, was reportedly trapped while trying to rescue household items from the blaze.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the fire broke out while Oyemara, his wife, and other occupants were inside the building. The inferno spread rapidly, giving them little time to escape. His wife, who sustained severe burns, is currently receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
The police spokesperson, Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident, noting that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
Witnesses said the quick intervention of officials from the Edo State Fire Service and Guinness Nigeria Plc helped to prevent the flames from engulfing nearby houses.
On Monday, a memorial Mass was held in Oyemara’s honor at his parish. Preparations are also underway to transport his remains to his hometown in eastern Nigeria for burial.
Survivors of the tragedy have appealed to the Edo State government and well-meaning individuals for support as they rebuild their lives.
