African nations continue to bolster their military air power to address security challenges and protect territorial integrity. Military aircraft are essential for combating insurgencies, counterterrorism, surveillance, and safeguarding national sovereignty.

According to the latest Global Firepower report, Egypt, Algeria, and Angola remain the top three African countries with the largest military aircraft fleets, showcasing a steady increase in their air power. These rankings consider active aircraft, including fighter jets, bombers, transport planes, and helicopters, but exclude those under development or on order.

1. Egypt

Egypt leads Africa with 1,093 military aircraft and ranks 8th globally. Its air force investments highlight the country’s strategic importance in North Africa, with aircraft used in defence, peacekeeping, and disaster response operations.

2. Algeria

With 608 military aircraft, Algeria ranks 17th globally and second in Africa. The fleet is critical for securing the vast Sahara desert and maintaining regional stability through advanced surveillance and defence capabilities.

3. Angola

Angola holds the third spot in Africa with 298 military aircraft, placing 34th globally. Recent modernisation efforts have strengthened its air force to support military operations and humanitarian efforts, particularly in oil-producing regions.

4. Morocco

Morocco ranks 4th in Africa, with a fleet of 278 military aircraft. Globally, it holds the 37th position. Its air force is pivotal in addressing security threats and supporting peacekeeping operations.

5. South Africa

South Africa stands at 5th in Africa with 182 aircraft, ranking 50th globally. Renowned for its advanced fleet, the South African Air Force contributes to peacekeeping and border security missions across the continent.

6. Sudan

Sudan ranks 6th in Africa and 52nd globally with 165 military aircraft. Its air force supports national defence and ground operations, particularly in conflict zones.

7. Nigeria

With 163 aircraft, Nigeria ranks 7th in Africa and 54th globally. The Nigerian Air Force plays a vital role in counterterrorism efforts, especially against Boko Haram, and participates in regional humanitarian missions.

8. Kenya

Kenya ranks 8th in Africa and 55th globally, with a fleet of 156 military aircraft. Its air force supports peacekeeping efforts in Somalia and ensures border security.
