ADC Faults Tinubu’s Security Approach, Says Banditry and Insurgency Spreading Nationwide

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of failing to address Nigeria’s worsening security situation, warning that the government’s lack of urgency and poor strategy are fueling the spread of insurgency and banditry across the country.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the remarks on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, describing the President’s response to the crisis as “insensitive” and “irresponsible.” He said Tinubu has prioritized political appearances and social events over his constitutional duty to protect the lives and property of Nigerians.

Bandit Attacks Escalate in Kwara, Kogi, and Oyo States

Over the weekend, reports emerged of intense bandit attacks in parts of Kwara State, a region previously known for peace and stability. According to Abdullahi, armed gangs have invaded nine local government areas, demanding ransom payments in food, drinks, and cash from terrified residents.

“In a disturbing twist, residents are now being forced to provide food items, drinks, money, and other services as ransom. This situation underscores the alarming fragility of the Nigerian state under Tinubu’s watch,” Abdullahi wrote.

The ADC spokesperson added that similar incidents have been recorded in Kogi State, where travellers were ambushed and abducted, and in Oyo, where fresh attacks have been reported.

‘Tinubu’s Government Failing to Protect Nigerians’ – ADC

Describing the situation as a “complete failure of governance,” the ADC condemned what it called the President’s silence and lack of concrete action despite nationwide killings, kidnappings, and displacements.

“On the same day as the Kwara attack, gunmen struck in Kogi State, killing travellers and abducting women and children. Yet, the presidency has neither acknowledged the crisis nor presented any plan to support victims or hold perpetrators accountable,” Abdullahi said.

He added that over 180 schools across Northern Nigeria have been shut down due to rising insecurity, leaving thousands of children at home and communities in fear.

ADC: Tinubu’s ‘Progress Claims’ Are Empty Rhetoric

The ADC dismissed President Tinubu’s recent claims of “progress” in the fight against insecurity, calling them empty political rhetoric that contradict the daily reality of Nigerians.

“From Plateau to Zamfara, Benue to Niger, Kaduna to Kwara, incidents of abductions, mass killings, and forced displacement continue to rise. The federal government keeps claiming progress, but the bloodshed on our streets tells a different story,” the statement said.

Abdullahi further accused the President of showing indifference to citizens’ suffering while continuing to attend funerals, political events, and social gatherings, ignoring the ongoing violence.

“This sends a dangerous message that the President values political optics over the safety of Nigerians,” he said, recalling that Tinubu failed to visit Plateau State earlier in the year after months of deadly attacks that claimed hundreds of lives.

ADC Warns of Worsening Crisis Unless Urgent Action Is Taken

The ADC concluded by urging President Tinubu to immediately review his national security strategy, deploy stronger military presence in vulnerable communities, and ensure accountability for failures in Nigeria’s security architecture.

“The President’s continued detachment from the country’s grim reality either reflects cruel indifference or a tragic oversimplification of a complex crisis. Either way, Nigerians are paying the ultimate price,” Abdullahi said.
