President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given approval for the creation of the Federal University of Science and Technology in Epe, Lagos State — officially ending a seven-year pause on the establishment of new federal tertiary institutions.
The announcement was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Thursday’s plenary session, confirming that the President has signed the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe (Establishment) Bill, 2025, into law.
“I am pleased to announce that His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has assented to the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe (Establishment) Bill, 2025,” Akpabio said.
He explained that the Senate had earlier forwarded the final version of the bill to the President, who returned two signed copies, completing the legislative requirements for the new university.
With the presidential assent, the university is now officially recognized. Akpabio congratulated the people of Epe and Lagos State, describing the development as a significant milestone.
The Senate President also commended Tinubu for prioritizing the education sector, saying the establishment of a specialised science and technology institution reflects his commitment to widening access to quality higher education.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, the bill’s sponsor, highlighted that the university will specialise in core science and technology programmes crucial to Nigeria’s growth. These include Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil Engineering, among other fields central to the country’s digital future and knowledge-driven economy.
The approval comes only months after the Federal Executive Council, chaired by President Tinubu, announced a seven-year suspension on the creation of new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education — a move intended to consolidate existing institutions.
