Tinubu Set to Dissolve Nnamdi Azikiwe University Governing Council Over Controversial VC Appointment

By Okafor Joseph Afam, November 20, 2024

President Bola Tinubu is reportedly set to dissolve the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, amidst mounting controversies surrounding the appointment of Bernard Odoh as the university’s vice-chancellor.

The controversy stems from allegations of false claims in Odoh’s academic profile, notably a disputed professorship at the Federal University, Gusau (FUGUS). Both the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria have criticized the appointment process, citing irregularities.

The Federal Ministry of Education nullified Odoh’s appointment on November 1, 2024, after it emerged that the council excluded ministry representatives and key stakeholders during the selection process. Sources indicate that the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, is expected to formally announce the dissolution of the council, led by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe.

Allegations of False Claims

The Federal University Gusau discredited Odoh’s academic claims, stating that he was never a staff member, pioneer head of the geology department, or involved in any academic capacity at the institution. This contradicted Odoh’s assertion that he became a professor there in 2015.

Despite these denials, Odoh, through his media aide Charles Otu, defended his claims, insisting on his ties with the university and the validity of his professorship.

Procedural Lapses and Ministerial Nullification

The university’s governing council appointed Odoh on October 29, 2024, as the 7th substantive vice-chancellor. However, the university senate boycotted the process, citing unresolved discrepancies in the advertised criteria for the position.

In a letter dated November 1, 2024, the Federal Ministry of Education deemed all appointments made by the council null and void due to the absence of ministry representatives and other key stakeholders. The letter emphasized the council’s disregard for due process and directed a halt to further appointments.

ASUU’s Reaction

The ASUU National Executive Council (NEC) described Odoh’s appointment as illegal and a mockery of the university system. The union demanded urgent intervention from President Tinubu, who serves as the university’s Visitor, to restore order and uphold the principles of due process.

In a statement signed by ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke, the union expressed a lack of confidence in the Mbadiwe-led council, calling for its immediate dissolution.

Implications for Governance

This crisis highlights ongoing challenges in the administration of Nigerian universities, including transparency in appointments and adherence to regulatory frameworks. As President Tinubu prepares to take decisive action, stakeholders await a resolution that will restore the university’s credibility and ensure a fair selection process for its leadership.

The anticipated announcement marks a critical moment for Nnamdi Azikiwe University, as it navigates this period of administrative upheaval.
