President Bola Tinubu on Monday urged Brazilian oil giant Petrobras to resume operations in Nigeria, emphasizing its vital role in unlocking the country’s vast gas reserves and boosting economic growth.
Speaking after talks with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the Planalto Palace in Brasília, Tinubu said the invitation to Petrobras was central to renewed Nigeria–Brazil cooperation.
“We have the largest deposit of gas. I don’t see why Petrobras will not be back in Nigeria as soon as possible,” Tinubu said, thanking Lula for promising swift action.
Tinubu admitted past challenges had slowed bilateral relations but vowed that era was over. He also stressed Nigeria’s readiness to strengthen ties in technology transfer, energy, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and food sovereignty.
On aviation, Tinubu endorsed the newly launched direct Lagos–São Paulo flights, describing them as a gateway for trade, cultural exchange, and investment. “Aviation will provide additional opportunity for business to grow, culture to succeed, and everyone to benefit,” he said.
Lula reaffirmed Brazil’s strong alliance with Nigeria, hailing the flights as the start of a “Cultural Renaissance” that will deepen people-to-people ties. He also called for joint efforts in trade, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and tackling transnational crime.
Both leaders pledged closer cooperation on climate change ahead of COP30, with Tinubu reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to tropical forest protection.
Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s youthful population, gas resources, and recent economic reforms as key drivers of growth. He also assured Brazil of Nigeria’s political unity behind the agreements while endorsing the country’s bid for G20 membership and a permanent UN Security Council seat.
“Brazil and Nigeria are here to grow the economy for the people, by the people, and for the people of the world,” Tinubu declared
