President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that police officers attached to Very Important Persons (VIPs) across Nigeria be withdrawn and reassigned to regular policing duties.
The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s spokesperson, who stated that the police will now focus more on their primary responsibility of protecting the general public rather than guarding individuals.

According to Onanuga, the directive was issued during a high-level security meeting held on Sunday in Abuja, attended by the heads of the Army, Air Force, Police, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Under the new policy, VIPs who still require personal security escorts will need to obtain armed protection from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) rather than the police.

The move comes as President Tinubu also approved the recruitment of 30,000 new police officers, aimed at boosting manpower and strengthening national security operations.
