President Bola Tinubu has called for the immediate evacuation of residents from flood-affected areas in Maiduguri and surrounding regions of Borno State. This urgent directive follows the devastating overflow of the Alau Dam, which has displaced thousands and caused extensive damage to critical infrastructure.
In a press statement issued by his aide, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed his heartfelt condolences to the victims and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting those impacted by the disaster. The President expressed deep concern for the affected communities and acknowledged the severe impact of the flooding on essential services such as the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the Post Office.
“The worst flood in recent decades has displaced thousands of residents and affected facilities such as the Post Office and the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital,” the statement read. Tinubu also extended his condolences to families who have lost their homes and livelihoods due to the overflow of the Alau Dam.
While assessments of the full extent of the damage are ongoing, President Tinubu urged for swift action to ensure the safety of the affected population. He directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide immediate assistance to the flood victims.
President Tinubu assured Governor Babagana Zulum that the Federal Government stands ready to collaborate with state authorities in addressing the humanitarian crisis. “The President remains committed to mobilizing federal resources to support the state during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
The flooding marks one of the most severe natural disasters Borno State has faced in recent years, with ongoing efforts to provide relief to displaced residents.
