President Bola Tinubu has signalled Nigeria’s intention to deepen security cooperation with the United Kingdom as part of efforts to address rising insecurity linked to instability in the Sahel region.
Speaking during a state reception hosted by the British Royal Family at Windsor Castle, the Nigerian leader stressed that the country faces complex security threats with regional implications. He noted that as West Africa’s largest democracy, Nigeria bears a significant responsibility in maintaining stability across the sub-region.
Tinubu said collaboration with the UK remains crucial in tackling these challenges, expressing optimism ahead of his scheduled meeting with Keir Starmer. According to him, stronger bilateral engagement could enhance efforts to combat terrorism, insurgency, and cross-border criminal activities.
Confidence in Nigeria’s future
The President projected optimism about Nigeria’s trajectory, describing the nation as resilient and full of potential. He highlighted the country’s youthful population, entrepreneurial spirit, and determination to achieve economic and social progress despite prevailing challenges.
He also underscored the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the UK, noting that both countries share common values rooted in progress, resilience, and democratic ideals. Tinubu expressed confidence that this partnership would continue to grow stronger, especially within the framework of the Commonwealth.
Diaspora strengthens bilateral ties
Tinubu praised the Nigerian diaspora in the UK, describing it as a vital link between both nations. He acknowledged the contributions of Nigerians across sectors, particularly in healthcare, where many professionals play key roles within the National Health Service.
He also pointed to the achievements of prominent figures of Nigerian heritage, including Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Maro Itoje, and Anthony Joshua, as symbols of the strong human connection between the two countries.
Reflection on shared history
Recalling Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, Tinubu expressed appreciation for the support he received in the UK during the military era. He recounted how he found refuge in Britain and received protection amid threats from the then military regime, describing the gesture as a lasting symbol of solidarity.
The President also referenced Britain’s historical contributions to democratic governance, including the Magna Carta, which laid the foundation for the rule of law and modern democracy. He further cited influential thinkers such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Edmund Burke as key figures shaping democratic principles.
As Nigeria seeks to strengthen international partnerships, Tinubu’s engagement with the UK signals a renewed push to address regional insecurity while advancing diplomatic and economic cooperation
