In a bid to enhance content moderation and ensure user safety, TikTok has announced the removal of 2.1 million videos in Nigeria during the second quarter of 2024. These videos were found to have violated the platform’s community guidelines.

According to the Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, shared on Tuesday, the videos removed represent less than 1 percent of the total uploads from Nigeria during that period. The report highlighted that 99.1 percent of these videos were proactively taken down before users could report them, with 90.7 percent removed within 24 hours of being uploaded. These figures underscore TikTok’s ongoing commitment to staying ahead of harmful content and maintaining a safe environment for Nigerian users.

TikTok reiterated its dedication to investing in new technologies to improve content moderation and address potential risks, reinforcing its transparency efforts. The company emphasized that this move is part of a broader global strategy aimed at enhancing platform safety for its diverse user base.

Beyond Nigeria, TikTok reported that over 178 million videos were removed globally in June 2024 alone, with 144 million of those removals facilitated through automated systems. “With a proactive detection rate now at 98.2 percent globally, TikTok is more efficient than ever at addressing harmful content before users encounter it,” the platform stated.

TikTok, owned by ByteDance, a private global company founded by Chinese entrepreneurs, remains focused on creating a safer digital space for users worldwide, including Nigeria.
