A heated physical clash between soldiers and police officers in Jos, Plateau State, has sparked panic among traders and residents in the area. At least two soldiers and two police personnel were reportedly involved in the altercation, which occurred at the bustling GSM Centre in the Hamaz area of the city.
While official details are still emerging, eyewitnesses on social media claim the confrontation started after a dispute between a soldier and a roadside phone repairer. According to Facebook user Bello Lukman, the soldier became furious when the trader allegedly damaged his phone instead of fixing it. When the soldier attempted to arrest the trader, a nearby police officer intervened, suggesting the matter be taken to a station.
Lukman wrote that the soldier then called for backup. A team of soldiers arrived in a Hilux vehicle, assaulted the policeman, injured him, and allegedly seized his rifle. He added that officers were later withdrawn from the area, prompting traders to seek help from other security personnel to prevent the situation from escalating. A potential tragedy was reportedly avoided as the policeman had earlier cocked his weapon.
Responding to the incident, the Plateau State Police Command confirmed the clash, noting that order has since been restored.
In a statement, the police spokesperson, SP Alabo Alfred, said: “The Plateau State Police Command is aware of the recent altercation between police officers and military personnel on December 1, 2025, at Hamaz, Ahmadu Bello Way, Jos.”
He noted that the matter was treated with utmost seriousness and investigated, leading to disciplinary action against the officers involved by their respective agencies.
SP Alfred reassured the public that measures have been put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future. “The misunderstanding between both security agencies has been resolved, and steps taken to ensure it does not happen again,” he stated
