Ten Feared Dead as Four Vehicles Collide on Jos–Bauchi Highway

No fewer than 10 people have lost their lives in a devastating multiple-vehicle accident along the Jos–Bauchi Road in Plateau State.

The crash, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, December 23, at about 12:12 a.m., involved four vehicles—two articulated trucks and two Ford Galaxy buses.

Eyewitness accounts described the impact as violent, with several occupants trapped inside the wreckage. Ten victims were confirmed dead at the scene, while others sustained various injuries and were immediately evacuated to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Confirming the incident, the Plateau State Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Peter Longsan, disclosed that all the deceased were adult males.

In a statement, the FRSC said the accident happened shortly after a military checkpoint on the outskirts of Jos, the state capital. The agency revealed that a total of 19 people—17 men and two women—were involved in the crash.

According to the FRSC, those injured were taken to the General Hospital in Miango, the Jos University Teaching Hospital, and the Plateau State Specialist Hospital for medical care.

The corps further stated that eight of the deceased were deposited at the morgues of the Plateau State Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital, while two bodies were released to officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers for burial.

The rescue operation was jointly carried out by personnel of the FRSC, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army and members of the host community.

While investigations are ongoing, the FRSC noted that preliminary findings identified excessive speed and reckless driving, leading to loss of control, as the primary causes of the crash.

The Plateau State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Olajide Mogaji, lamented the incident and commended residents who promptly alerted emergency responders.

He cautioned motorists against night travel, speeding, fatigue, illness-related driving and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, warning that such behaviours often result in fatal accidents.

Mogaji also expressed concern that the tragedy occurred less than two weeks after a similar crash claimed the lives of eight University of Jos students.

He urged road users to prioritise safety, obey traffic regulations and promptly report emergencies via the FRSC toll-free number, 122.
