The safe period refers to a time when a woman might not get pregnant if she has unprotected s*x

For the modern woman, using an app that helps you track your period is the best way to know when your safe period is.

But how does period tracking work?

The worse time to have sex – when you are ovulating. This is halfway between your period, which is sometime around days 12, 13, 14.

Quick maths, your circle is 28 to 30 days. Halfway into it is 14 days

During ovulation, a mature egg is released from your ovary and once it meets sperm, fertilisation occurs.

The time that might seem safe is during your period. Can you get pregnant during your period when fertilisation did not occur and your uterus is shedding its lining?

The answer is supposed to be a straight no but there are some issues involved:

1. Hygiene concerns

For some people, period sex is a no brainer. However, based on a Twitter poll, 1 in 5 men will agree to have sex with a woman during her period.

So although that period is safe, it might not be ideal.

2. She might not be on her period

Some gynaecologists say that it might be ovulation bleeding and not period bleeding.

Having sex during that time can lead to an unplanned pregnancy.

3. Sex immediately after your period lowers the chance of pregnancy

Although the chances of getting pregnant during this period are pretty low, anything can happen. This is because sperm is active for about three to five days after sex and then ovulation might begin a few days after your period.

In a way, unprotected sex will always be a Russian roulette but the farther you are from ovulation, the less likely you are to get pregnant
