Tension has gripped parts of Benue State after suspected armed herdsmen reportedly set fire to a classroom block at L.G.E.A. Primary School, Akombo, near Ayiim in Logo Local Government Area.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, also led to the destruction of stored seed yams, deepening fears among residents in the farming community.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers invaded the area in the evening, with gunshots heard during the assault, forcing residents to flee for safety. The fire reportedly gutted parts of the school, leaving the classroom block badly damaged.

In addition to the destruction of school property, agricultural produce—especially seed yams kept nearby—was completely burnt, raising concerns about the coming planting season.

The affected community has continued to experience recurring security challenges, with farmers increasingly afraid to access their farmlands due to repeated attacks in surrounding areas.

A resident, Hulega Keghter Kenneth, said the situation has left locals deeply unsettled despite no confirmed loss of life.

“We thank God that no life was lost, but there is growing uncertainty about returning to our farms in the affected areas,” he said.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to issue an official response. Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command were unsuccessful.

Residents are calling for urgent security intervention to restore peace and enable safe return to farming activities in the area.
