A new poll conducted by BusinessDay (BD) Intelligence has revealed that Nigerian workers spend nearly 40% of their monthly salaries on house rent, highlighting the growing burden of accommodation costs across the country.

The survey, which examined household spending patterns among employed Nigerians, showed that rent has become one of the most significant expenses for many workers, particularly in major urban centers like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt.

According to the findings, rising inflation, stagnant wages, and limited access to affordable housing have worsened the financial strain on average income earners.

Experts warn that the situation could push more Nigerians into housing insecurity, as many are forced to live in smaller apartments or relocate to the outskirts of cities in search of cheaper rent.

The report urged policymakers to implement housing reforms and expand mortgage access to ease the growing pressure on tenants and promote sustainable urban living.
