Super Falcons Return to Abuja After Historic 10th WAFCON Title Win

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Super Falcons of Nigeria have arrived in Abuja to a heroic welcome after clinching their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.
The team landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at exactly 2:26 p.m. on a chartered flight and were greeted by cheering fans and top government officials. Among those present to receive the champions were the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Culture and Tourism, Hanatu Musawa, and Minister for Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim.
As part of the celebrations, the Falcons are expected to parade the WAFCON trophy in an open-top bus through major streets in Abuja before proceeding to the Presidential Villa for a special reception with President Bola Tinubu.
The Super Falcons made headlines across the continent on Saturday after completing a stunning comeback to defeat host nation Morocco 3–2 in a dramatic WAFCON final. Morocco had taken a commanding 2–0 lead by halftime, with goals from Ghizlane Chebbak and Fatima Tagnaout Mssoudy.
Nigeria’s response came in the 63rd minute, when Okoronkwo converted a penalty following a handball in the box. She then assisted Ijamilusi in the 71st minute for the equalizer. The decisive moment came in the 88th minute, when Echegini slotted home the winner from a free kick.
The win not only sealed Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title but also preserved their perfect record in tournament finals — ten wins in ten appearances — solidifying their status as Africa’s most successful women’s football team.
The Falcons’ achievement has sparked nationwide celebrations and renewed calls for increased investment in women’s sports development in Nigeria.
