Sterling One Foundation, working alongside Sterling Bank, Sunbeth, public sector agencies, community volunteers, and strategic partners, has intensified efforts to protect Nigeria’s environment through a large-scale Environmental Cleanup and Beach Adoption exercise held on Saturday, November 29, 2025.
Aligned with the United Nations Decade of Action, the nationwide initiative covered 17 states, including Wuse Market in Abuja, Alpha Beach in Lagos, and 15 other locations across the country. The exercise underscored the urgency of sustained, community-driven action to curb plastic waste, tackle environmental pollution, and restore ecological health nationwide.
Across all locations, hundreds of volunteers—comprising environmental professionals, youth groups, community members, and government representatives—worked together to evacuate waste, promote recycling consciousness, and encourage responsible waste management practices.
Speaking in Abuja, Business Executive, Institutional Banking, Sterling Bank, Tunde Akande, emphasized the importance of grassroots involvement.
“A clean and safe city thrives on continuous community participation. What we are seeing in Abuja today reflects shared responsibility and pride in our environment,” he said.
Also commenting on the initiative, Director of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, Engr. Braimah Osilama—represented by Omenta Rachael Chinenye, Head, Community Sanitation & Education—described the collaboration as crucial to sustainable impact.
“Environmental progress requires ongoing education, strong partnerships, and active community engagement. We commend the dedication of all volunteers involved,” she noted.
At Alpha Beach in Lagos, Divisional Head, Commercial Banking, Sterling Bank, Akporee Idenedo, reaffirmed the bank’s long-standing environmental commitment.
“The enthusiasm from residents and stakeholders is remarkable. Through initiatives like our Sterling Environmental Makeover (STEM), which has run for over a decade, we remain committed to protecting shared spaces and improving quality of life,” he said.
CEO, Sterling One Foundation, Olapeju Ibekwe, described the nationwide cleanup as a symbol of collective national responsibility.
“This campaign shows what is possible when Nigerians unite for a common cause. Every volunteer effort contributes to a cleaner, healthier future. We remain focused on expanding awareness, strengthening partnerships, and sustaining climate action across the country,” she stated.
In total, volunteers across 18 locations collected plastic waste, cleared debris, and participated in sensitisation sessions on recycling, waste sorting, and sustainable disposal practices.
