The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has issued a strong warning to the Federal Government, threatening to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike if the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement is not concluded by the end of April 2026.
The position was made known in a communiqué released on Sunday in Abuja after the union’s 54th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Ekiti State University.
The statement, signed by SSANU National President, Muhammad Ibrahim, criticized the slow progress and uncertainty surrounding ongoing negotiations with non-teaching staff unions. The union pointed to the absence of clear timelines and firm commitments from the government.
SSANU called on the Federal Government to urgently resume talks and finalize the agreement in a transparent and time-bound manner.
According to Ibrahim, the union has issued a final ultimatum spanning April 1 to April 30, 2026, within which the renegotiation must be completed and formally signed.
He warned that failure to meet the deadline would compel the union to join forces with its partners under the Joint Action Committee (JAC), including the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, to embark on an indefinite strike across Nigerian universities.
The union also lamented ongoing delays in salary payments and the non-implementation of approved wage increases, noting that the situation has worsened the financial strain on its members.
SSANU further demanded the immediate payment of all outstanding salaries and called for the adoption of a centralized salary system, recommending the use of Remita to enhance transparency and efficiency.
