Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has dismissed claims that South East governors have abandoned the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking during a media parley on Thursday night in Umuahia, the state capital, Otti stressed that the region’s governors are actively engaging relevant authorities to secure Kanu’s release. He noted, however, that not all efforts can be made public due to the sensitive nature of the matter.

“Some of the engagements and assurances we have received are not for public consumption since it may derail the process. But as his governor, I’m at the forefront of ensuring he comes back home. All the South East governors are together in this,” Otti stated.

The governor’s remarks followed a protest at the Abia State Government House on Wednesday, where Igbo elders from across the region expressed concern over Kanu’s continued detention. The elders accused political leaders in the South East of neglecting the IPOB leader and urged Otti to mobilize his colleagues to engage directly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the matter.

Governor Otti’s clarification appears aimed at reassuring stakeholders that the South East political leadership remains united in pressing for a resolution to Kanu’s incarceration.
