The Sokoto State Government has ordered an immediate suspension of all school fee collections in public secondary schools across the state.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ladan Ala, issued the directive following the establishment of a ministerial committee tasked with reviewing widespread complaints regarding levies charged by schools. The suspension, he explained, will remain in effect until the committee concludes its findings and submits formal recommendations.

In a statement released by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Mohammad Iya, the commissioner cautioned that any principal who disregards the directive will face swift administrative sanctions.

Prof. Ala further clarified that principals are expressly prohibited from collecting payments for Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) levies, admission and testimonial fees, statements of results, or contributions to the Muslim Students Society (MSS).

Additional charges now suspended include fees tied to the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results and certificates, answer sheets, screening forms, as well as Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) and certification fees under NECO, NABTEB, and NBAIS.

The commissioner reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to easing the financial burden on parents while ensuring accountability in the state’s education system.
