Popular Hausa singer Hamisu Breaker and TikTok influencer Abubakar Ibrahim, also known as G.Fresh, have been sentenced to five months in prison or a fine of ₦200,000 each for the abuse of the Nigerian currency, the Naira.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned both men before Justice Sale Musa Shuaibu at the Federal High Court in Kano on separate charges of Naira abuse, a violation of Nigeria’s financial regulations.

Offences and Sentencing

Hamisu Breaker was convicted for spraying ₦200 notes, totaling ₦30,000, at a party in Hadejia, Jigawa State. The action, widely circulated on social media, drew public scrutiny and triggered EFCC intervention.

Similarly, G.Fresh was found guilty of spraying bundles of ₦1,000 notes during a shop opening ceremony held in the Tarauni area of Kano State.

Both defendants pleaded guilty when the charges were read in court. Following their pleas, Justice Shuaibu handed down the sentence: five months in prison with an option of a ₦200,000 fine each.

EFCC’s Warning on Naira Abuse

The EFCC, in a statement following the sentencing, reiterated its commitment to enforcing the Central Bank of Nigeria’s guidelines on the use of the Naira, particularly regarding its abuse at public events such as weddings, parties, and celebrations.

The commission warned the public, including entertainers and influencers, to desist from any form of Naira mutilation, spraying, or trampling, which it described as acts capable of undermining the integrity of Nigeria’s currency.

Background and Implications

The conviction of Hamisu Breaker and G.Fresh follows a growing wave of arrests targeting celebrities and public figures who engage in acts that violate the country’s currency laws. The EFCC has intensified its efforts to curb such practices and promote respect for national symbols.

Analysts believe the convictions send a strong message to entertainers and social media personalities to lead by example and promote lawful conduct during public appearances.

The case adds to the ongoing campaign by authorities to restore discipline in the handling of Nigeria’s currency and preserve the dignity of the Naira.Stay with SpringnewsNG Media Limited for the latest updates on EFCC enforcement actions and financial crime cases across Nigeria
