The University of Jos (UNIJOS) community has been thrown into deep mourning following the gruesome killing of a 300-level Banking and Finance student, identified as Peter Mafuyai. He was allegedly attacked with a machete and buried in a shallow grave by his close friend, Nanpon Timnan, a 200-level Agricultural Science student.
The tragic incident was reported to have taken place in Rurso, an off-campus area where both students resided. Residents described the two as inseparable companions, which has intensified the shock surrounding the incident.
Reports indicate that the duo spent the day together, engaging in football activities before heading to a music studio to work on a recording. The disturbing turn reportedly occurred shortly after they returned home.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that Nanpon allegedly fetched a machete upon arriving at their residence. When questioned by neighbors, he reportedly gave no clear explanation. Shortly after, he allegedly attacked Mafuyai, killing him instantly.
Startled occupants raised an alarm and rushed outside to seek help. On their return, Nanpon had allegedly hurriedly buried his friend’s remains behind the house. The horrific discovery sparked panic and outrage throughout the community.
Police officers from the Plateau State Command have since launched a comprehensive investigation. All individuals close to the deceased have been summoned to assist in determining the motive behind the attack.
Although the exact cause remains unclear, some sources suggest the tragedy may be linked to a disagreement regarding the music project both students were working on earlier that day. Law enforcement authorities have not yet confirmed this claim.
UNIJOS Management clarified in a statement signed by Registrar Rejoice James Songden that the incident occurred entirely outside the University premises. The institution further emphasized that the 2024/2025 academic session officially ended on August 30, 2025, which means students were not in session when the incident occurred.
The statement assured the public of ongoing security measures to protect lives and property within the University community. The institution also pledged full cooperation with security agencies to ensure justice prevails and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Vice-Chancellor, speaking on behalf of the entire University, extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, praying for divine comfort during this devastating period.
