Abuja, Nigeria — Senate President Godswill Akpabio has officially removed Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, following her recent suspension from the upper legislative chamber.
During Thursday’s plenary session, Akpabio announced Senator Aniekan Bassey as the new chairman of the committee, effectively replacing Akpoti-Uduaghan whose status had remained uncertain due to her unresolved suspension.
The development follows an earlier committee reshuffle in February, during which Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was moved from the Senate Committee on Local Content to the Diaspora and NGOs Committee.
Although the Senate leadership has not issued an official explanation for her latest removal, the decision is believed to be linked to her ongoing suspension.
It will be recalled that Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court recently ordered the Senate to reinstate Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and directed her to apologise for her alleged misconduct. However, the Senate has maintained that it is yet to receive a certified true copy of the court ruling.
Meanwhile, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has yet to issue the court-mandated apology, leaving her status within the National Assembly unresolved.
