Senate Insists Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Remains Suspended, Awaits Court of Appeal Ruling

The Nigerian Senate has rejected a request by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to resume legislative duties, insisting that her six-month suspension remains in effect until the Court of Appeal delivers judgment on her case.

In a letter signed by the Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, the Senate confirmed it had received notice from the Kogi Central lawmaker, who stated she intended to resume on September 4, 2025, which she claimed marked the expiration of her suspension.

However, the Senate clarified that her suspension, which began on March 6, 2025, is still subject to judicial review.

“The matter remains sub judice, and until the judicial process is concluded, no administrative action can be taken to facilitate your resumption,” the letter read.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended in March over allegations of breaching Senate standing orders. While the Federal High Court in Abuja upheld the suspension, she has since challenged the ruling at the Court of Appeal.

According to the Senate, her suspension will only be reconsidered after the appellate court delivers its judgment, making her return to plenary uncertain.

The development underscores the ongoing legal and political battle surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s role in the 10th Senate, as her constituents in Kogi Central await clarity on her fate.
