Secondus, Opara, Sekibo, Others Throw Weight Behind Fubara Amid Rivers Power Struggle

As tensions resurface between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, several influential political figures in the state have openly declared support for the governor.

Among those backing Fubara are former Peoples Democratic Party National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus; former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Austin Opara; Senator Alabo Abiye Sekibo; and ex-Governor Sir Celestine Omehia.

Governor Fubara revealed their support on Thursday during the 2026 New Year State Banquet held at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Addressing guests at the event, the governor said the presence of the respected leaders was a clear indication of their unwavering support for his administration, as well as for President Bola Tinubu.

The renewed rift follows a breakdown in the earlier reconciliation between Wike and Fubara, which was brokered by President Tinubu months ago.

Recently, the former Rivers governor accused his successor of straying from the terms of the peace agreement, stressing that agreements must be honoured—an assertion widely interpreted as a move to frustrate Fubara’s re-election prospects.
