ABUJA, Nigeria — The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has announced the expulsion and 30-year ban of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over allegations of forgery and fraudulent membership claims.

According to a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, El-Rufai was never officially registered with the SDP despite his public claims on social media that he was a member.

The SDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) explained that El-Rufai failed to fulfill the constitutional requirement of registering at his ward level, and instead allegedly forged his membership documents to present himself as a legitimate party member.

The statement read in part:

“Upon thorough inquiry, it turned out that the Kaduna State chapter of the SDP was correct in asserting that El-Rufai had not joined the party through any lawful means. Instead of registering properly with the Ward Executives, he forged documents and falsely claimed to be ‘Number 001’ on the membership register of Unguwar Sarki Ward in Kaduna North Local Government Area.”

The SDP emphasized that El-Rufai’s actions violated the party’s core principles and its constitution.

“This act is not only fraudulent but disrespectful to the party’s internal structures and existing members. It is contrary to all updated records of the SDP in Kaduna State.”

As a result, the NWC imposed a 30-year ban on the former governor, barring him from seeking admission into the party or participating in any of its activities at any level.

The move comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with El-Rufai’s political affiliations and next steps closely watched by analysts and party loyalists nationwide.
