Sanwo-Olu Urges Lagos Landlords: Don’t Hike Rents, Ease Residents’ Burden
By Okafor Joseph Afam – December 10, 2024
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on landlords and landowners in the state to avoid raising rents and land prices, emphasizing that such actions would undermine efforts to improve the quality of life for residents. The appeal was made on Monday during the inauguration of the Abiola/Ajayi/Ogba and Obawole/Iju-Ishaga road at Ifako-Ijaye Local Government Area (LGA).
Speaking at the event, the governor highlighted that the state’s infrastructure projects are designed to alleviate the burdens of residents and enhance their living conditions, not to impose additional financial pressures.
“I want to make an appeal to landlords and landowners,” Sanwo-Olu said. “Do not increase your rents and land prices. The essence of the infrastructure built is to bring relief to the people and not burden residents further. Please allow the people to enjoy the benefits of enduring years of poor environmental conditions.”
He further urged property owners to support the government’s vision of transforming communities by ensuring that residents can afford to live and do business in improved environments.
Infrastructure for Community Transformation
The 643-meter road project, including a strategically constructed bridge with slip roads, was initiated on October 24, 2022. It links several communities previously separated by a swampy belt, where wooden bridges were used to facilitate crossings for a fee.
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that such projects are part of his administration’s broader agenda to resolve long-standing challenges such as flooding and inefficient commuting.
“Kabiyesi, please ensure that this bridge is not turned into a dumping site for trash,” he added humorously, addressing traditional rulers in attendance.
Restoring Vital Connections
In addition to the Ifako-Ijaye project, the governor inaugurated the Alapere pedestrian bridge in Kosofe LGA, which was destroyed by an articulated vehicle in December last year. The reconstruction of this critical pedestrian link underscores the administration’s commitment to public safety and seamless mobility.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s dedication to the welfare of Lagosians, urging all stakeholders to collaborate in building a sustainable and inclusive city.
By ensuring that infrastructure projects bring tangible benefits to all, the governor hopes to foster an environment where residents can thrive without the additional burden of skyrocketing living costs.
