Ruud van Nistelrooy, currently serving as Manchester United’s interim manager, has hinted at his possible future with the club as he awaits the arrival of incoming head coach Ruben Amorim. The Dutchman, who stepped in following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, expressed excitement about meeting Amorim and a commitment to continue supporting the club.
Van Nistelrooy has led United in two matches so far—a commanding 5-2 win over Leicester City in the EFL Cup and a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday. With Amorim set to join from Sporting Lisbon, bringing his own coaching staff, there is uncertainty about Van Nistelrooy’s role moving forward.
After the Chelsea match, Van Nistelrooy told reporters, “I look forward to getting to know [Amorim] better. He’s done very well in Portugal. I’m looking forward to continuing to help the club move forward.” He added that he hasn’t spoken with Amorim yet but anticipates a conversation soon.
In a separate interview with Sky Sports News, Van Nistelrooy stated, “We are behind the new manager. The focus now is on the upcoming games, but I’ll work hard to make this club better every day.” His passion for the role was evident on Sunday, celebrating Bruno Fernandes’s penalty with enthusiasm, underscoring the “special” connection he feels with United since rejoining as assistant manager over the summer.
Reflecting on his return, Van Nistelrooy told BBC Sport, “I came here to help in any capacity. After these two games, I hope that can continue. It’s special to be back in the city and at the club.” He emphasized the importance of instilling the club’s culture in the players, which he believes has laid a strong foundation for future growth.
Sunday’s match saw United lose their lead after Moises Caicedo’s volley secured a 1-1 draw for Chelsea in what was a relatively subdued affair at Old Trafford.
