Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is set to hold crucial showdown talks with the club’s hierarchy following Saturday’s Premier League clash against Burnley at Old Trafford, according to reports.
The Portuguese manager has endured a difficult start to the 2025/26 season. Despite encouraging performances against Arsenal and Fulham, United picked up just one point from their opening two league games. The situation worsened on Wednesday night when the Red Devils crashed out of the EFL Cup, losing on penalties to League Two side Grimsby Town after a 2-2 draw.
Amorim appeared visibly frustrated after the defeat, hinting that he could walk away from the job after the Burnley match.
According to The Mirror, while Manchester United have no immediate plans to sack Amorim, the board is concerned about the team’s results and overall direction. Former sporting director Dan Ashworth had previously favoured ex-England boss Gareth Southgate for the role, while current chief executive Omar Berrada pushed for Amorim’s appointment.
United are also working to bring in a new goalkeeper and central midfielder before the transfer deadline, with the outcome of those deals expected to influence Amorim’s stance on his future.
Reports claim that United are already eyeing possible replacements, including Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, should Amorim’s tenure come to an early end.
Amorim’s Tactics Under Fire
One of the biggest criticisms of Amorim has been his insistence on sticking to a 3-4-3 formation, a system United have struggled to adapt to since his arrival last October. The midfield has appeared disjointed, while the wing-back positions remain a major weakness.
After the Grimsby defeat, Amorim admitted his frustration:
“I would like to say very smart things and very important things. I have nothing to say. Nothing to say. That is the biggest problem also. To see the same mistakes and nothing to say in this moment. I’m really sorry for our fans. It’s too much sometimes.”
With pressure mounting, Saturday’s match against Burnley could prove pivotal. A poor result may not only accelerate internal talks but also bring his short Manchester United reign closer to an end.
