The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced that the state of emergency in Rivers State will officially expire on September 18, 2025.
Wike disclosed this on Saturday after casting his vote in the ongoing local government elections in Rivers State.
He expressed optimism that, with the expiration of emergency rule, the Rivers State House of Assembly would resume its legislative functions, restoring normal governance at both state and local levels.
Background
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly for six months in a bid to avert a deepening political crisis in the oil-rich state.
Wike’s Remarks
Speaking on the elections, Wike praised the peaceful turnout of voters across the state.
“As far as we are concerned, this election is peaceful. People are trooping out, and at the end of the day, it has been conducted successfully,” he said.
He further assured that the expiration of the state of emergency would pave the way for stability.
“By September 18, the state of emergency will expire, the state assembly will come back to their job, and we will have a government at the grassroots level. The coast is clear for normalcy to return.”
With the emergency nearing its end, stakeholders in Rivers State are watching closely to see how the resumption of democratic governance will reshape the state’s fragile political landscape.
